Ground Round History
Ground Round is a family friendly restaurant chain that was founded in 1969 by Howard Johnson. This American casual dining eatery has a versatile menu that primarily features snack foods, pitches of beer and burgers in a basket. According to the latest statistics, there are approximately 30 locations spread across the U.S. in 13 states. The company is owned by Independent Owners Cooperative LLC and is headquartered in Freeport, Maine.
The first location had a neighborhood pub theme where all manner of guests, including families and couples could feel comfortable when dining out. Even though it only had a small menu consisting of 12 items, these were all served in a casual, relaxing and permissive environment. As the first “no rules” eatery in the neighborhood, it became a huge success with customers.
During its early years, the restaurant became popular for hosting kid’s parties and showing classic silent movies and cartoons on a big screen. They also had a mascot called Bingo the Clown who was famous for giving away whole peanuts and guests were not discouraged from discarding peanut shells on the floor after use.
By the 1980s, Ground Round had already evolved into a fun, family oriented diner where guests could come to enjoy quality food and service. The restaurant met guests’ expectations by making a few changes such as improving food quality, portion size, taste profiles, customer service and overall value.
Today, the restaurant’s menu features a combination of new varieties, rich flavor profiles, and portion sizes that are unmatched by any other casual dining restaurant in the country. They continue to create a unique dining experience that surpasses most customer expectations, while also providing customers with great value for their money. In short, Ground Round is a place for families, friends and sports fans. Their menu consists of all types of burgers including gluten-free and specialty items, not to mention the drinks.

We wish they did a little more to prevent cross contamination for those who are highly sensitive or allergic to gluten, but for those who aren’t, this could be a great place to try out!
