Mug Root Beer History

Mug Root Beer is a unique root beer drink owned by PepsiCo. However, the beverage is produced by PepsiCo’s subsidiary company known as New Century Beverage which is based in San Francisco, California. This brand was originally held by Belfast Beverage Co. during the 1940s when it was known as Belfast Root Beer. Later in 1947, its name was changed to Mug Old-Fashioned Root Beer in an advertisement.

Everything about this drink is designed to appeal to the consumer’s senses, from the rich foam to the unique aroma and feeling of ice-cold freshness. It’s the perfect beverage for the entire family. This product was officially acquired by PepsiCo in 1986, about 40 years after it was created. Some of the ingredients found in it include Quillaia extract, Citric Acid, artificial flavors, modified food starch, and high fructose corn syrup.

In the late 1960s, various flavors were introduced into the brand such as Mug Cream Soda, Diet Mug, and Sugar-Free Mug. Moreover, after Pepsi acquired Mug Root Beer in 1986, they set out to replace the On-Tap Draft Style Beverage as the company’s main root beer brand. The product currently features a unique logo where a bulldog mascot, commonly known as Dog, is seen holding a jug of tasty root beer. Additionally, Mug Root Beer’s website showcases a free online comic where visitors can read the bulldog’s adventures.

In 2015, PepsiCo announced that they would start using Sweetmyx Flavor as an enhancer for their drink. This ingredient is manufactured by Senomyx. They revealed that a concentrated variety of the substance was designed to improve the flavor of Mug Root Beer sold in the United States. Pepsi first partnered with Senomyx in 2010 with a goal of the “discovery, design and commercialization of organic high-potency sweeteners and enhancers”. During that time, PepsiCo’s chief research officer, Mehmood Khan, divulged that their goal was to not only create products that were healthy but also ones that tasted great, such as Mug Root Beer.
