KFC History
KFC is an international fast food chain that was founded by Harland Sanders in 1930. At the time, he was in the midst of a depression, but still mustered the courage to open his first restaurant in a small gas station in Corbin, Kentucky. During this time, the restaurant was known as Sanders Court & Café, with Sanders serving in multiple positions such as the chief cook, station operator, and cashier.
Sanders was born in 1890 on a farm just outside Henryville, Indiana. At the tender age of 6, his father passed on and he had the responsibility of looking after his younger siblings while their mother spent long hours at work. One of his duties was feeding his smaller brother and sister. This is where he began honing his cooking skills and by the age of 7, Harland was already a seasoned cook.
KFC is one of the few original American brands that boasts a rich tradition and history. Their success is partly attributed to a list of secret spices and herbs which were written on the back of his kitchen door more than 70 years ago. In 1936, Sanders’ restaurant began enjoying massive success, and by 1950, the Kentucky state governor named him colonel, the highest honor that a U.S. state can bestow upon a citizen. Following this title, Harland began dressing the part to appeal to more customers, adopting a clean white suit and colonel bow-tie that has made him a pop-culture icon for Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Currently, KFC is the most popular chicken restaurant chain in the world, specializing in their same original recipe, as well as other new options such as extra crispy chicken, buttermilk biscuits and home-style sides. There are around 18,000 KFC locations in the world spread across 115 countries and territories. Despite opening so many locations globally, the company has still not compromised on its recipe even for a second.

Summary
While KFC does have some sides and salads that are gluten-free, you won’t be able to put them on the side of anything as they don’t offer any chicken without gluten.
The gravy has gluten
Hey Tim!
Yes, unfortunately, the gravy that comes separately with the mashed potatoes does have gluten in it. The mashed potatoes by themself are gluten-free.
Please can you make a gluten-free chicken menu & make me feel part of the “normal” world again. It would be easy to make a decent chicken coating using gluten-free flour. Thank you.
Hey Barry,
I would love some gluten-free chicken. I haven’t been to KFC for probably 7+ years because they really don’t have anything I can eat. We can hope!
Why is their baked or grilled chicken have wheat flour on it? No one bakes or grills a chicken with flour on it.
Another site says the mashed potatoes are not gluten-free.
Hey Heather,
According to KFC’s own website, the mashed potatoes are gluten-free and don’t contain any wheat. They do contain Milk and Soy.
It is inconceivable that KFC can’t make a chicken coating that is gluten-free. There are so many options now. I can easily make gluten-free chicken at home but it doesn’t taste like the KFC that I crave. It should also be dairy-free because the two go hand in hand.
Hey Nancy, yes we can hope! Perhaps one day KFC will have a gluten-free option.
I agree! I have celiac and must eat gluten free and would think KFC by now would have gluten free.
I think it’s rather laughable that they do not offer gluten-free chicken! It’s quite easily made so I don’t know why they can’t make a gluten-free batter as I do. If they could actually do this I would drop by in a flash.
Agreed Dave! I would love me some KFC haha. But I don’t think they’ll be getting gluten-free chicken any time soon, unfortunately.
Omg, someone make them get gluten-free chicken. 😫 I miss KFC.
