Max and Erma’s Gluten-Free Menu 2024

Here is the complete Max and Erma’s gluten-free menu.

Max and Erma’s restaurant has a great selection of gluten-free food on their menu and even offers a gluten-free burger bun. They have a separate gluten-free menu available and list any modifications or substitutions needed to ensure that your meal is gluten-free.

They do state that because of their preparation environment, they can’t guarantee that some cross-contamination might not happen, so be aware of that if you have a gluten allergy.

Don’t hesitate to ask to speak to the manager if you have any questions about ordering. It may not be perfect for those who are allergic to gluten, but they do a great job providing information and some great gluten-free options.

Max and Erma’s History

Max and Erma’s is a casual dining restaurant chain based in Columbus, Ohio. The company has around 41 locations found in multiple states across the U.S. including Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Most of their restaurants are company owned and managed. The restaurant’s ambiance has been described by experts as full service, and the food is served in a relaxed atmosphere with alcoholic beverages also on the menu.

The company’s founder is Barry Zacks, a Cornell graduate who returned to his hometown of Columbus in a bid to lay claim to his family’s foot gear company, the R.G. Barry Corp. However, he didn’t last long in this business and by 1972, Barry decided to start his own venture. He bought a local bar and restaurant from previous owners Max and Erma Visconik.

Based in the German Village region of Columbus, the building was put up in 1889 by the famous Franklin Brewing Company. Zack revamped his new business by targeting the middle price segment of dining, with a particular emphasis on singles. He even created a fun filled atmosphere with a versatile décor that’s nowadays described as a classic “garage-sale look”. This interior décor features moose head trophies, memorabilia and nostalgic photos, as well as a variety of brass and tiffany themed stained glass. Most promotions done by the company target the adult population.

While most of the chain’s key concepts have been a major success, the restaurant’s operations have still been marred by periods of unprofitability and general lack of direction. However, all that changed in 1968 when the founder & CEO, Barry Zacks, was voted out of office following a decision by the board.

Under a rather conservative managerial approach, Max and Erma’s increased in profitability from $15.5 million in 1987 to $79.9 million by 1996. Net earnings also grew from a mere $303,000 to $2.2 million. Today, the restaurant differentiates itself from competitors through their value oriented menu, friendly service staff and a family oriented dining atmosphere.

  • Gluten-Free Options

Max and Erma’s have a great gluten-free menu and offer a good variety of entrees, sides and even a couple desserts. They have a separate gluten-free menu which is great and make it easy to figure out what is safe to eat and what to avoid or leave off certain dishes. They do note that some cross contamination is possible due to a shared preparation environment. We think they do a good job to serve the gluten-free crowd, but be aware if you have a gluten allergy.
