Papa John’s History
Papa John’s is the 3rd largest pizza chain restaurant in the United States with more than 2,800 locations spread across 49 states in the country, as well as the District of Columbia and 20 global markets. About 570 of the total restaurants in operation are company owned, whereas the rest are run by franchisees. The company also has 115 subsidiary locations in the United Kingdom.
The first Papa John’s restaurant was opened in 1985 by John Schnatter in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Nevertheless, the company’s story started a year earlier in 1984 when Schnatter bought used cooking equipment worth around $1,600, then installed it in his father’s local inn and started making pizza.
John first got the idea of preparing pizza at the age of 15. At the time he was washing dishes at a pizza joint known as Rocky’s in his hometown. When the restaurant had lots of customers, John would occasionally be called away from his normal routine of washing dishes to help with making pizza.
His company would eventually become the Papa John’s brand, a publicly traded international pizza chain that registered around $1.4 billion in profits last year alone. By 1998, the restaurant was operating 9 distribution centers and supporting close to 1,500 units. A 10th store opened in Portland, Oregon during that same year, and the location in Louisville was also expanded from 35,000 to 82,500 square feet. Furthermore, they expanded globally for the first time by opening restaurants in Puerto Rico and Mexico.
Currently, Papa John’s stands as the most successful quality focused pizza company in the world with a relatively simple success formula. Their commitment to quality food can be seen in the rich ingredients they use, ranging from fresh traditional pizza dough to vine-ripened and freshly packed tomato sauce. In a highly competitive sector of the restaurant business, Papa John’s has managed to create its own lucrative niche by offering a versatile menu consisting of bread sticks, pizza, chicken strips, cheese sticks, chicken wings and bottled soft drinks among other unique products. Their trademark motto is “Better Ingredients, Better Pizza”.

Summary
Papa John’s does have a gluten-free crust available as well as gluten-free wings.
Um, yes they do. I just ordered a Papa John’s pizza with gluten free crust. And most toppings are either meat or veggies, which are both gluten free. Where the hell does the media get their information?
Hey Jayson, not all stores had the gluten-free crust for quite a while. But I can confirm they have rolled this out to all stores now. We’ve updated the post above.
Hey Jayson, Papa John’s doesn’t advertise this and I even reached out to their representative before publishing this and they confirmed they don’t offer gluten-free crust. Perhaps your local Papa John’s has a franchise owner that does? If so that is awesome! But they don’t advertise anywhere as a company that they offer gluten-free options.
Gluten free is not an option for ordering Papa John’s pizza in my area (Central Louisiana). Pizza Hut has gluten free items, but not in my area. Domino’s DOES have gluten free crust – so Domino’s will get my pizza business.
Thanks for the update Jane. I updated our Pizza hut menu to let people know that gluten-free crust is only available in certain locations.
Dominos, who does offer gluten free crust, let me know that they do not use separate sauce, toppings or pans so it will be cross contaminated. I asked if we can buy just a crust to try it and they said no.
Hey Patti! Yes, with Dominos, Pizza Hut, and the more *fast food* type pizza places, you need to be very careful about cross contamination. We have a warning about that on our Domino’s page: https://nogluten.com/dominos-gluten-free-menu/
Please be careful recommending people eat the wings! In the U.K. Papa Johns wings ALL contain gluten.
Thanks for the heads up Helen! I have updated the menu above with a warning about the wings for those in the UK.
This info is currently out of date. Here in West Michigan, GF Pizza is absolutely on their menu, and might I add, is far superior compared to most of the competition at the ingredient level, which I guess means they’re really living up to their motto.

Thanks John! I can confirm the gluten-free crust has been rolled out to all locations. I’ve updated the post above.
It is so difficult for coeliacs who cannot have any cross-contamination; the gluten-free crust is useless if it’s been cooked in the same oven or prepared in the same space as gluten products. 😒
Completely agree- it’s only when it affects someone personally do they understand and do something about it.
Completely agree! Sadly, most restaurants and fast food chains are horrible when it comes to cross-contamination.
